Our Goals:
1) To present a competition that is an enjoyable and educational experience for pre-professional ballet students, age 12-21 years for males and females, giving the participants a stepping stone towards bigger national and international competitions.
2) To create an environment where each student, whether an award winner or not, can leave with a real sense of personal accomplishment and a new understanding of the artistic and technical requirements for a young ballet dancer.
3) To provide an administration with high standards of integrity in our management of the event from the moment the students first register through to the end of the weekend.

Judges for the CDA Connecticut Classic 2012

Leslie Browne, Sylvie Guillaumin-Mesnier and Christopher Hird:

Leslie Browne received her early training with her parents, Kelly Browne and Isabel Mirrow, both former members of American Ballet Theatre. At the age of 14, she received a scholarship to The School of American Ballet. After 1 ½ years at SAB, she joined the NYCB and performed in the corps de ballet, all of the major Balanchine works along with ballets by Jerome Robbins and new works of choreography.

At the age of 17, Leslie won the role of Emilia in the movie “The Turning Point” opposite Mikhail Baryshnikov, and went on to be nominated for an academy award for best supporting actress. Following her movie debut, she went on to join American Ballet Theatre as a soloist. She then made her 2nd movie debut in the movie “Nijinsky” starring opposite Alan Bates. Following “Nijinsky”, Leslie rejoined ABT to premiere Kenneth McMillans production of Romeo and Juliet. Following her debut, she was promoted to Principal dancer.

She continued performing in ABT many roles in the Tudor repertory including Caroline in Jardin aux Lilas, Hagar and the little sister in Pillar of Fire and leading roles including Dark Elegies, Dim Lustre, The Leaves are Fading and Gala Performance. Leslie also danced Myrta and Giselle in Giselle, Odette-Odile in Swan Lake, Kitri in Don Quixote, Gamzatti in La Bayadere, Clara in The Nutcracker, principle roles in the Balanchine ballets La Sonnambula, Balet Imperial, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Who Cares, Apollo, among many other roles and new works of choreography.

Leslie left ABT in 1993 to pursue guest engagements. She also studied acting with Uta Hagan at the Actor’s Studio, performed on Broadway in several plays and musicals. She also danced in productions with the NYC Opera. Today Leslie teaches students at The School at Steps, ABT Summer Intensive, The NJ Ballet, and is a judge and teacher for the Youth America Grand Prix. She also choreographs for both students and professionals and does private coaching.

Sylvie Guillaumin-Mesnier, born in France, studied ballet at the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School. At age 16, she graduated from the school and made her way through the ranks of the world renowned Company, becoming a Soloist in 1983. She was trained by famous artists Nina Viroubova, Josette Amiel, and Gilbert Mayer.

In 1984, she won a Bronze Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Helsinki, Finland. This led her to accept a contract as “Principal” with the Northern Ballet Theatre in Manchester, England. As this company changed hands in 1987, she moved to the U.S. as Principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, WA.

Guillaumin’s repertoire includes every major leading role, including Giselle, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, Swanilda in Coppelia, Clara in the Nutcracker, and Paquita. She also danced the leading roles in Theme and Variations, Symphony in C, Agon, 4 Temperaments, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Tzigane, Ravel Concerto among other Balanchine and Robbins works, and Juliet in Kent Stowell’s Romeo and Juliet. Ballets have been created on Guillaumin: Robert de Warren (Desdemona in his newly choreographed Othello), Joseph Lazzini (Cantadagio), and Amedeo Amodio (Suite Italienne), Lar Lubowitch, and Val Caniparoli also created unique parts for her. Guillaumin was privileged to interpret lead roles in works by Anthony Tudor, Paul Taylor, Glen Tetley, Maurice Béjart, Bill Whitener, Ann Reinking, among others.

Guillaumin toured extensively, dancing on major stages worldwide: Paris Opera (France), Bolshoi (Russia), Mariinsky (St Petersburg), Covent Garden (London), and in the United States, Japan, Finland, Greece, Spain or Italy. She premiered the role of Odette/Odile in a new version of Swan Lake choreographed by André Prokovsky in the presence of HRH Princess Margaret, and was invited to participate in a gala organized as a tribute honoring Dame Ninette de Valois. Since her retirement from stage, Guillaumin dedicated her life to coaching aspiring dancers, sharing her love and passion for ballet. She teaches repertoire and technique, specializing in competition coaching. Her masterful experience allows her to help dancers of all ages reveal themselves.
